Overview:

Aligning Research Infrastructure organisational goals with human resource: the role of the data science professional framework

The format of this session aimed at strategists, senior managers, course and team leaders is to present a panel of informed thinkers and leaders and develop a structured discussion around the organisational benefits of a professional framework for data science practitioners. Whilst aimed at major research infrastructures and their teams, the topics apply equally well to other major data-centric organisations. This is important as many research infrastructures are looking to develop significant collaborations with heterogeneous organisations in the future.

The session will be chaired by Ruben Riestra, a senior business consultant who has led the fieldwork and market research that has underpinned the solid foundations of the EDISON project's framework for the data science profession. Ruben will introduce and question a select group of informed thinkers and leaders drawn from the EDISON project's Liaison Groups, a select think tank that is supporting the work. We anticipate that the panel will include a senior research infrastructure manager, an experienced data science university course leader, and a research infrastructure policy maker.

Target Audience:

The target audience would be senior stakeholders with a vested interest developing the data science profession. This would include all those whose roles and skills profiles relate to managing and leading the data science family: senior data scientists, data managers, data curators etc. employers of data scientists, recruiters of data scientists, trainers and educators of data scientists, governance-level strategists in academia, research, business or policy-setters.

Benefits for Audience:

The aim of the session would be to convince data science leaders and managers that a professional competence framework will enable them to excel in their strategic goals by maximising the benefits from, and retaining, their organisation’s human resource capability in a changing environment shaped by the digital revolution and higher competitive pressures.

Topic 3: A changing environment, changing research
